WAKE UP
The soft, rhythmic whoosh, whoosh of air is what you hear first, perhaps it's a breeze? The cyclical beep beep in the distance doesn't really jive with a lot of nature scenes, though. A moment or two later your vision comes back to you, blurry in the beginning but becoming clearer with each breath you take. All around you is an opaque blue dome, and when you can wrest your limbs to move, the blue retracts and you're met with a staid metal room.

What happened? Where are you? Your memory is fuzzier still, there being no easy way to jog it like your vision. What you can remember is that there was an accident: one minute you were in your home world, and the next you were in this foreign place surrounded by people you've never seen in your life. Not just any people—scientists, who were trying desperately to create matter, to break the laws of physics and chemistry, in order to save their world. Because their world was dying, and they had tried everything else and then some. Their experiment was a failure, but not all is lost—translocation is a valid solution, after all. They could just send all their people to a non-doomed world, and start anew. And they would have, if the machine they used to bring you here hadn't short circuited. Your combined luck isn't terrible, though, somehow, because there exists one more copy of the machine squirreled away in the space colony floating in a distant solar system somewhere, the Plan B of this dying civilization.

That's why you're here, waking up in this pod in a cloud of cold air and colder remembrances to the murmuring of other strangers around you. You don't recognize any of them (vaguely you remember something about keeping the other travelers separate for quarantine purposes), but a soothing, sonorous electronic voice interrupts your thoughts.

GOOD MORNING. WELCOME TO THE WILD DELIVERANCE. THE ONBOARD TEMPERATURE IS 25 DEGREES CENTIGRADE AND THE DAY IS SATURDAY. WE WILL BE ARRIVING AT OUR DESTINATION SHORTLY, SO PLEASE SIT BACK AND RELAX. THE CAPTAIN WELCOMES-

No I fucking don't. Wakey, wakey, you formerly comatose cryptids. We've got a bit of a problem, and no I'm not talkin' about the end of this world, or how you miss your bed and just wanna go home. It's a bit more immediate and simpler than that, ain't that grand?

There's fucking parasitic aliens on this ship and they're not friendly. Just ask our two engineers, Kelvin and Calli—wait you can't, because they're DEAD thanks to our local alien assholes.

Don't worry though, I've got a plan. But hey, if you can solve this on your own go for it—might wanna start with the basic profiles on your new fancy PDA. Maybe you can just ask someone if they're an alien? Hahahahaha.

Talk to ya later!

OOC: Welcome to Convive! All characters wake up in the pod room, completely naked, though their color coded space suit and personal effects are in a storage compartment attached to their pod. Additionally, all characters will naturally understand each other due to a totally innocuous implant!

Also, stand by to meet your friendly neighborhood NPC on Sunday at 1 PM EST. Be there or be square!

[ Waking up naked is pretty mortifying and there is only a little high pitched eek from Atra's corner before she light-speed shuffles for her clothes and gets dressed at absolutely record speed. Phew. Crisis... averted? No, crisis not averted at all, because there are still other people in various states of undress around... Atra wants to get to know the people with her but how embarrassing!! You might find her catching glimpses through her fingers as she waits for everyone to get at least their lower halves covered...

... or if you struggle with your space-suit, she might approach. She's still a red-faced but eager to help. ]

Have you never done this before?

[ Later, you will find Atra in the cafeteria, acting like she belongs. She's taking inventory in the cooking area and wiping down surfaces because she does not trust their new captain yet, thanks.

If anyone looks at her curiously, she'll explain: ]

I cook for a living, you can leave this part to me!

[ Or you'll spot her in the greenhouse, where she's also already getting the hang of taking care of the plants. A real busybody, this girl. At least you won't have to worry about food with her around. ]
ghostinmichelle: (wait what)

waking up

[personal profile] ghostinmichelle 2020-11-28 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
What gave it away?

[ Misaki's mouth quirks wryly as she fumbles with her suit's fastenings. At least she's properly clothed under it, reducing poor Atra's awkwardness as much as possible. ]

Wait, are you saying you have done this before? Did you... go to space camp or something?

[ This girl can't be a career astronaut, right? She doesn't look that much older than Misaki herself! ]

Space... camp?

[ Guess who has never even heard of that? It's Atra. But regardless of that bit of communication breakdown, he'll make her way over to Misaki and reach out to show her how one of the clasps is done. ]

Here, they work like this. These are a bit different from those at home, but the principle's similar enough.

[ ... which ties right into the question. She should answer the question, oops. ]

I was cook on a spaceship for a while.
ghostinmichelle: (oh?)

[personal profile] ghostinmichelle 2020-11-28 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you know, like a camp where you learn how to be an astronaut? I think they have one at the space center down in Kagoshima...

[ Oh, there we go, thanks, that's a lot easier. With Atra's help, Misaki gets herself belted into the suit in a manner bordering on properly - and then that last bit catches up to her. ]

Wait, so you've actually been on one of these spaceships before? Um, if you don't mind my asking, how old are you...?

[ She's got kind of a babyface, after all. Maybe she just looks like a fellow teen. ]

[personal profile] girlsrevolution 2020-11-28 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[ And here's the thing... now Atra kind of wants to ask what an astronaut is, but she's also starting to feel slightly stupid, so maybe it's best to let the conversation move on a little...?

Not that it seems to help any of their issues. ]

Uhm... I'm 18. And yes, I was. I went on a rather big trip to Earth when I was 16. I haven't been in space very often since, but the company I work for has jobs like that fairly often.
ghostinmichelle: (wut)

[personal profile] ghostinmichelle 2020-11-29 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
...

[ Misaki pauses for a long moment, halfway through lifting the helmet to her head. It rests in her hands, forgotten, as she stares at Atra. ]

You went on a trip... to Earth? From... where, exactly?
girlsrevolution: (pic#14475592)

[personal profile] girlsrevolution 2020-11-29 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[ ... hm. This... is starting to make less sense and then more sense. Atra presses her fingertips together, a fidgeting movement to help her think. ]

Mars. That's where I grew up. I'm not... I'm not an alien or anything! Just in case that thing the captain said worried you! Where I am from, Mars is a colony of Earth.
ghostinmichelle: (i see)

[personal profile] ghostinmichelle 2020-11-30 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
...I'm sorry, could you give me a moment?

[ Misaki shifts the helmet to one hand so she can (hopefully surreptitiously) massage her temple with the other. She's pretty sure that last she checked, Mars wasn't a colony of anything, so in normal circumstances, she'd assume this girl was just another of the weirdos her life tends to leave her saddled with. But also in normal circumstances, she wouldn't be asking this girl for help putting on a real live spacesuit on a real live spaceship. If she's serious... ]

Okay, uh, you have to understand how all this sounds to me. I live on Earth [ and boy is that weird to specify ], and we've only ever made it to the moon. So... if you're telling the truth... you're from the future?
girlsrevolution: (pic#14475661)

[personal profile] girlsrevolution 2020-11-30 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose so...?

[ It doesn't seem all that unreasonable compared to all the weird things the scientists half-explained to them when they first woke up and maybe 'from the future' is actually a bit more reasonable than a whole different world even...?

But this girl... is she from before the Calamity War, even? If they've made it to the moon and the moon got heavily damaged in that war... That's a past so far away, Atra can barely imagine it. ]

Honestly, my head is spinning a little trying to imagine all this... I don't really know history very well either, so I don't even know what Earth would have been like in your day...
ghostinmichelle: (uh)

[personal profile] ghostinmichelle 2020-12-02 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't know future history, so I guess we're even...?

[ Time travel and people from Mars. God. This is so weird. Misaki struggles to not entirely lose her marbles; she can usually keep it together for a little longer than ten minutes after waking up. ]

Uh, how's life on Earth different from Mars, where you're from? We could do a compare and contrast, type of thing.
girlsrevolution: (pic#14465955)

[personal profile] girlsrevolution 2020-12-02 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhm... Honestly, I did not spend a lot of time on Earth, so it's a bit hard to say.

[ The time she was on Earth was more often than not spent tending to the wounded of various fights, but that's... not a nice subject to breach and Atra doesn't elaborate. ]

The main difference is that Mars is poor, I... guess? Earth is the home of the wealthy, those in the colonies tend to have far less. There's a movement to change this! Wonderful people are working on improving conditions for us. But it's still... well, it's notable.
